Do you have ideas and energy regarding how MGEC functions and want to be part of the team that “steers the ship”? Now is the time to consider running for our Executive Board! MGEC is powered by its membership – we need your contributions to maintain our power at the bargaining table.
We asked current Board members why they ran; maybe their thoughts will resonate with you. (We asked only those who are not up for reelection this year to avoid any appearance of favoritism.)
By far, the largest factor that motivates our board is “wanting to have an impact and input on decisions being made.” Unlike other, much larger unions, MGEC is independent; there isn’t an International that acts as a hidden hand guiding our actions. YOU can have a major influence working with the Board as a team, making the impact that Board members talk about.
Board members learn from each other. One was surprised “how my opinions on what changes we can/should make changed once I got more acquainted with how the union’s business actually got done.” So much necessary work goes on behind the scenes; while we try to communicate it to the best of our ability, there’s no substitute to actively participating in it.
Board members also remarked how their service has brought them into contact with other MGEC people not only in their own agency but across the state enterprise. “It’s been interesting working with board members from the other agencies and getting their perspectives on things.” But ultimately, they serve “to look for ways we can provide more for our members.”
THANK YOU to Blake Nelson, Wes Leksell, and Bruce Henningsgaard for not only providing insights but your Board Service!
