MGEC will no longer be providing a PE exam review course. MGEC started offering the PE exam review class in the early 1990s; this long standing tradition was successful for almost 30 years! This change is the result of upcoming retirements for some instructors and other instructors balancing many responsibilities (work, children, etc.). The exams have been transitioning to an online basis and it’s expected that all will be online within the next couple of years.
Instead, starting in November 2020, MGEC will provide reimbursement for Full Members enrolled in a review course for their Professional Engineer or Professional Land Surveyor exam. The maximum one-time reimbursement will be $250 per Full Member.
The following conditions must be met to be reimbursed for the review course you select:
- You must be a Full Member of MGEC and have been in good standing for at least one year. If you need information about signing up to be a Full Member, please go to https://mgec2023.wpengine.com/membership/join-mgec/.
- Submit the completed MGEC Professional Licensure Review Course Reimbursement Form via email to mgec@mgec.org.
- Include a copy of your receipt showing the course and amount you paid toward the course. MGEC will only provide funds on a reimbursement basis.
Additional funds are available to members of MAPD (Minnesota Association for Professional Development). To learn more about MAPD or to join, please go to http://mapd.us
- Currently 10 members are taking the ASCE PE Review class with assistance from MGEC and MAPD. We’re looking forward to their feedback.
MGEC PE Review Course Instructors-Thank you!
As MGEC has ended the PE Review course. we felt it was appropriate to honor the instructors. They were given their choice o an apple award or Yeti tumbler. Here are some of the comments from them:
“Sad news about the class, I thought it was a wonderful class when I took it and I was happy to help come full circle to teach it.”
“I’m glad to have had the opportunity to teach this class basically since I started at MnDOT in 2009! I will miss teaching it, but understand the challenges (and relevance) of offering a class like this.”
“I have to say that I think the class was what got me through the test. It really helped focus me, because I sort of forgot how to study after college.
That help is why I have always participated in the class. It was in appreciation and wanted to give back to other new engineers as a form of thanks”.
“I have struggled lately about keeping up with the changes in the test format and if our review is still helpful, or worth what we charge for those outside MGEC. I’ve always focused on teaching for knowledge instead of just teaching to the test. I don’t think the students always think that way. The test was a lot different 25-years ago.”
“At the MPCA, most of our new engineers are taking the environmental exam and they have not participated fully in the civil focused MGEC class and don’t have the same benefit or appreciation for the help the class provides. That has made it difficult to recruit new teachers for our topic.”
“I think the proposal to reimburse for a review class is a great idea. I’m sure that will provide a much broader curriculum and options. It will also better cover those who are not taking just the civil exam. That will definitely be a big benefit for the engineers at the MPCA who are not taking the civil test”.
“I have been thinking of a way to “retire” from the class, but have felt a bit guilty about it. This change in exam review assistance will definitely allow me to bow out more gracefully. I thank you for that too.”
