New Employees: To become a Full Member of MGEC, download, sign and email to mgec@mgec.org.
An individual’s relationship to MGEC can take various statuses. Dues for membership levels vary but are based on the negotiated rate of pay for the Senior Engineer (Range 9, Step 1).
All State of Minnesota employees who are assigned to any of the following job classifications are automatically included in the bargaining unit. Dues for members are based on the pay scale of the senior engineer. As of July 3, 2024, the dues amount is $17.28 per pay period for Full Members. MGEC has kept dues much lower than other state bargaining units.

Types of Membership
A person who chooses to be a Full Member shares all the benefits and rights of membership in the organization. Dues currently are $17.28 per pay period.
A person who is assigned to any of the above classes and does not voluntarily join MGEC as a Full Member or Supporting Member is considered a “represented non-member.” Represented Non-Members cannot vote on the labor contract or organizational matters and do not have the same financial benefits for some MGEC educational or social functions as a Full Member would. The MGEC contract does apply to them and MGEC is their “exclusive representative.” Over 91% of eligible Members elect to be Full Members rather than Represented non-member Members.
The MGEC Board of Directors may grant this status to a retiring member who has been a member in good standing for at least three years. No dues are assessed once this status is reached, but Life Members may receive MGEC news updates, invitations to the annual meetings and social events provided they update their personal contact e-mail with MGEC.
Persons who are engineers or in related classes may choose to voluntarily associate with MGEC. Associates are Registered Professional Engineers or related professionals who are employed by the State of Minnesota and are not currently members of Bargaining Unit #12, who voluntarily choose to associate with MGEC. Any member of MGEC promoted to a State position outside of MGEC can also become an Associate Member. This status provides no opportunity to vote on the MGEC contract, or to vote or run in MGEC officer elections. Associates receive MGEC updates and invitations to the annual meetings and social events and are eligible for scholarships. Associates contribute dues (currently $4.99) per pay period.
