The announcement by Governor Walz yesterday about the state’s telework policy changing June 1 to require most state agency employees to work in-person for at least 50% of their scheduled workdays each month was as much of a surprise to MGEC as we’re sure it was to you. We only learned about the policy change after hearing about it from your fellow MGEC members. There was no attempt to communicate with MGEC by anyone at MMB, the Governor’s Office, nor any agency about this sudden and significant change. We’re completely blindsided.
MGEC and the other union partners met with MMB earlier today about this policy change. MMB shared that their direction to the specific agencies is that the agency should have their specific plan finalized by May 1 and that more communication will come to you from your agency soon.
Over the last few years, we have heard from our membership about the value that the flexibility that being able to work from home has brought to their lives. It has greatly enhanced the work-life balance that you value. We’ve also heard about how workplace flexibility has enhanced your production and been an enormous benefit to the employer. Having workplace flexibility is a success story. It is in light of these discussions that we are very surprised by this development.
Your experiences matter. The hardships this abrupt policy shift create matter. MGEC will do what it can to minimize any disruptions and bring your voices to the employer.
We encourage you to share your stories with us. Other unions are asking their members to share their stories as well. Reach out to us at mgec@mgec.org to share your stories about how this impacts you as a valuable state resource. Your identity will remain anonymous as MGEC shares your stories with the employer.
This is a great example where union membership matters and we encourage everyone to join if you’re not already a member. JOIN NOW!
Please know that we support you and will continue to fight for the interests of our members!
